What is a Concrete to Fibreglass Conversion?

What Does Converting Concrete to Fibreglass Actually Involve?

  • Most Perth pools were built with pebblecrete or render — a surface that becomes rough, porous, and prone to blistering over time.
  • A fibreglass conversion replaces that ageing surface with a smooth, non-porous coating applied directly to your existing pool shell.
  • The result feels and performs completely differently — no rough edges, no chemical battles, no blisters.
  • You keep your existing shell. We remove the old surface, prepare it correctly, and apply the fibreglass — typically in four to five days.

Why Resurface

What a Fresh Fiberglass Finish Actually Fixes

These are the most common signs a fibreglass pool surface has reached the end of its life — and exactly what a proper resurface resolves.

How Concrete to Fiberglass Pool Resurfacing Works

  1. Drain & Assess

We fully drain the pool and evaluate the condition of the existing concrete surface — identifying cracks, hollow spots and any structural issues that need to be addressed before the conversion begins.

  2. Prepare

The old concrete finish is ground back to expose a clean, solid substrate. Any cracks or hollows are filled with specialist resin and sealants. This stage determines everything — a conversion is only as good as the preparation underneath it.

  3. Prime & Laminate

An ester primer is applied to seal the concrete and create a strong mechanical bond. Fibreglass matting is then hand-laid across the entire pool interior and saturated with high-grade resin — building the fibreglass lining layer by layer directly onto your existing pool.

  4. Gelcoat & Finish

Once the laminate has cured and been sanded smooth, a UV-resistant, non-porous gelcoat is applied in your chosen colour — giving the pool its final smooth finish and the protection it needs to handle WA conditions for decades.

This is the most common concern homeowners have — and it is a legitimate one. When the preparation is done correctly, the fibreglass resin mechanically bonds to the concrete surface and becomes effectively inseparable from it. The key is thorough surface preparation and the right primer. This is exactly where we focus our attention on every conversion job.

Yes — and this is one of the major advantages of a concrete to fibreglass conversion over a pre-made factory shell. Because the fibreglass is applied by hand directly onto the existing pool, we can build custom steps, add a tanning ledge or adjust the depth before the laminate goes on. It is an opportunity to improve the pool while restoring it.

Concrete is naturally porous — algae roots itself into the surface, chemical consumption is higher and the finish needs attention every 5 to 10 years. A fibreglass gelcoat is non-porous, significantly smoother and built to last 15 to 20 years with far less maintenance. For most concrete pool owners across Perth and regional WA, converting to fibreglass is the last resurface they will ever need.
